One of the many things I have come to value over the last few years is the notion to take advantage of an opportunity when it presents itself. You have an opportunity! You have one chance (seniors this is your last chance) to take your team to the state tournament. It's your choice to embark on this opportunity and make the best of it or just let it go away. Now is the time for focus, to revisit goals and a time to go back and remember what you worked for all season long. Forget about past mistakes, things you wish you would have done differently. Tomorrow is a fresh start, a chance to make a statement and leave an impression that will last. WIN or lose leave knowing you gave your best! I’m proud of all of you!

Three years ago, Kelly Duffek oversaw an eager group of girls as the freshman basketball coach at Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson. Even though none of them had played much softball, she convinced them to give the sport a try.

"I guess I wasn't too mean to them," she said. "I got them interested in softball. The one thing is they all want to get better. They think they need to get better."

The Lady Jackets continue to make strides, and Tuesday night was another shining example. Senior Ashtyn Neill fired a three-hit shutout and unrated Thomas Jefferson blanked Class 4-A No. 8 Sioux City North 3-0 at the Council Bluffs Stadium softball field.

It was the first win over North, a perennial softball power in Iowa, for Duffek, in her fourth year at the helm. Thomas Jefferson, 19-15 last year, improved to 5-1 and won its Missouri River Activities Conference opener, while dropping the Stars to 4-3 and 1-1.

"They've had a quality program, and any time you can get a win against them, it feels good," Duffek said.

Neill, who will play softball and volleyball at Southwestern Community College in Creston, turned in an outstanding performance. She struck out eight, walked one and worked around North singles in the fifth, sixth and seventh.

"I learned a curveball this season, and it's really made a difference," she said. "It's a good pitch to throw when I'm ahead."

The Lady Jackets opened the scoring in the third when Val Robinson beat out an infield hit, took second on Kiersten Ruff's single and scored on an error.

In the sixth, Alyssa Hedrick's single put runners at first and second, and then Robinson's ground ball to short was thrown away. Marjory Christensen scored and Hedrick moved to third. Robinson took off for second before the play was over and was tagged out, but the Stars forgot about Hedrick, who scored to make it 3-0.

Robinson, first baseman Samantha Flowers and center fielder Sadie Smith were starters on the Lady Jackets' soccer team, which lost 2-0 in a regional final at West Des Moines Valley on Monday. Duffek expected the trio to perform well on Tuesday.

"I thought emotionally they might be drained a little bit, but I think they kind of came out wanting to prove something," she said.

Council Bluffs traditionally has not been a softball town. This is the 50th year of summer softball in Iowa, and Lewis Central's state appearances in 1975 and 1985 are the city's only blips on the radar. A win over North shows that the Lady Jackets are at the very least a contender.

"It's not unreachable," Neill said. "I have so much confidence in us. I know a lot of it depends on me throwing well. I think when I throw well, the team feels confident and it just all meshes together - like tonight."

Last night was a good win ladies! Anytime you don't play your best ball against the #8 rated team in the state and still get a win, you should feel good. You all have so much more to offer and it's only going to get better and better. I hope you all realize with a little work and some confidence you are capable of great things. Right now we need to focus on getting better than our last performance as a team and an individual.

We need to work on a few things before we step on the field the next time. I know you all are thinking bunting and yes we definitely need to work on that but there are few other things I would like to address first. First off, when we have a lead we need to play like we have a lead. This is a time when you need to show confidence in yourself and your teammates. Secondly, know that softball is a game of FAILURE. Your considered successful if you get a hit 30% of the time. To most of you that’s unheard of. You all strive for perfection and that is a great trait to have but you need to know how to handle the failures this sport throws at you. Its so unlike any other sport and it takes a very strong individual to play it. Learning how to deal with a failure and being able move on is something that will last you a life time in whatever challenge you take on. Lastly, we need to work on bunting.

Remember this is just the beginning. Enjoy each day you have out on the field because before you know it, it will be over. Don't look back on the season and wish you would have done something different. Do it now!

Even if your parents/family members don't want to play make sure they come for the entertainment and then of course the awards. Parents lead the series 1 game to 0. Come on ladies, you let your parents win!!!

I've finally came to grips and realized I can't change the outcome of the last game. For some reason, I thought if I put off talking about it, it wouldn't have happened. I'm usually the type of person who wants to deal with it and move on! Funny how the outcome of one thing can change a person. I do know one thing...I have a fire that is burning inside and I'm going to be more than ready when the season (off season) starts! We have several fires to tend to, and the first is our conference. No longer is winning a few games in conference alright. We need to win conference. Yes, I said win the conference!!! If we do that everything else will fall into place. It will also give us a chance to compete to go to state. If you think going to the state tournament is just a dream, something that will happened if we're lucky, your thinking wrong!! You have to have the idea of going to the state tournament in your head 24/7. It's no longer a dream, it's a reality! But it's only a reality if we are all on the same page and we all strive for the same goals!! You all have accomplished a lot in the past year, both on and off the field, and I'm proud of you for it! You should be proud of this season, but not satisfied!! We have a ton of room for improvement and I know each one of you will enjoy the challenge and take it head on! That's what makes us all such good fighters.

I want to thank you all for all your hard work and dedication to softball during the summer. It takes a special person to do what you all do, not everyone can do it. You have to be mentally and physically tougher than other athletes! The challenges you have all taken on will not only make you better in the other sports you play, but it will make you a better person when you take on the challenges of life! You might not get it now, but trust me, later on in life you will understand and be glad you were faced with adversity early on and learned how to conquer it.

Good luck to those of you who are doing a fall sport! I'm going to be lazy and take the fall off. Well, off from sports. I will finally start my masters and get to read a couple of books. Reading is GOOD... Ashtyn, Val, Jessica and whoever else hates to read!! I will also spend it at McKena's smoccer games and probably watch a XC meet and VB game or two.

It was a great finish to regular season play! We are coming together as a team at the right time. If we hit and play defense like we did against Atlantic, we are going to be a hard team to beat in post season play. Tonight was a confidence builder for all of us. We had to battle through a tough inning and won the battle. That was a great mental boost. It taught us a valuable lesson that will make us even more ready and determined in post season play. As of right NOW the new season begins and we are 0-0. You dictate what our final record will be. One out at a time - one game at time. I believe in all of you, and know you will work hard and do what it takes to make this team successful!

Good win tonight!! We are definitely fighters!! Once again we fought our way to victory. Everyone did a great job!! We just have a few things to fine tune and we will be in the right place for regionals.
Things to work on:
1- Focus on the fundamentals of hitting and getting quality at bats.
2- Defensively we need to get back to the basics... alligator the ball, footwork, throwing mechanics.
3- Become a TEAM. This is a continuous process and will take work on everyone's part. Juniors, you have always been the glue...don't give in now. You guys have something special that started long ago, it would be sad to see it slip away your last and final year. You guys have the power to make it all happen.
4- Believe, have faith, and always work hard!!!

Softball tips to remember

Where to focus once you step in the box to hit?
Never look at the pitchers eyes. Focus on her hip where the ball will be released. While you are looking there, see if she gets her grip outside of her glove to give away any of her pitches.
Focus on seeing the ball right out of her hand. You eyes have enough time during a pitch to refocus 3 times. Your eyes will focus once at her hip, once half way, and once as it gets to you. The first time is most important to recognize the release and type of pitch, second time is important to see if it's a ball or strike. And the third is important to make contact.

How do you hit an outside pitch?
An outside pitch can be hit if you wait longer to take your swing. If you let the ball get deeper into the hitting zone, you can drive it the opposite way. If you try to hit it sooner, you will get it off the end of the bat and probably sting your hands and hit a "spinner".
Try to keep your front shoulder facing the pitcher as long as possible, and wait until the ball gets a little closer than usual and take your typical quick swing.

1- You play games to win them, not to lose them. I think we sat back on our heals and played to not lose. Be aggressive!!!
2- We're never going to become a complete team if you point a finger at someone else's mistakes and you don't own up and take responsibility for you own. Let me worry about what other people do and you worry about what you do. JUST TRUST ME!!!!
3- Don't forget about the Five second rule. You get five seconds of good or bad and move on. We have too many people dwelling or crying about past mistakes (heck, not even mistakes, we have people crying because they just didn't get a hit) and it's causing breakdowns for the next at bat or the next ground ball. It's also carrying over to other people on the team and bringing them down. Don't be scared to make a mistake...it happens.

We set our goals and pretty much accomplished all of them. Besides winning, the goal I'm most proud of us achieving is the staying focused and playing as a team goal!!! What a WIN!! There's nothing better then free softball (extra innings). A sign of a good team is when you can pull off a victory when your not playing your best game. In our case we weren't hitting but we still found a way to win the game. That was a total team effort and a great victory for all. Everyone should be proud! I AM!

We accomplished most of our goals, and best of all, won the game. The bats were asleep for a little while but they woke up when needed. Tomorrow against West, lets not wait around, lets jump on them right away and have some fun. Thumbs up to the "D" tonight, everyone did a great job.

It was a hard fought game tonight, and you all definitely showed your character! I'm proud of how you fought back and never gave up. The game didn't end up the way we wanted but a lot of good came from it. We need to work even harder to get where we want! It's going to take effort from everyone... from the first person in the line-up to the last one who comes in off the bench. Be proud but not satisfied. You haven't yet tapped the barrel of potential this team has. One game at a time...next up, Saint Albert.

Weekend blues!

WOW! This weekend was like going from 0 to 60 in 6.0 and then going from 60 to 0 in .2. We definitely started the tourney off the way we wanted, beating Mo. Valley 2-1. It was an all around great game. We manufactured runs, got the hits when we needed, and most importantly played defense when it counted. I was very excited and was impressed with the team that showed up for that game.

GAME 2: We played West Harrison and got beat 6-2, yes I said 6-2. Defense wasn't the greatest this game, 5 of their runs were unearned. What killed us the most was only getting 2 hits the whole game (I wish more people would have came to open gyms over the winter). They gave us several opportunities by walking seven batters, but we couldn't come up with the big hit when we needed it. We lost focus and couldn't get it back!! This is something we need to work on as the season goes on.

GAME 3: Saints earn FIRST victory!
In this game we played a very young and scrappy Saint Albert team. They didn't do anything spectacular, just made the plays and came up with hits when needed. One thing learned from this game is that we need to work on bunt coverage. They found our weakness and took it to us! We get another chance at them this upcoming week; I expect a different ball game!!!!!!!!!

Everyone should be very disappointed in the last two games of this weekend...Unacceptable if we want to step up to the next level of play. We can't forget the first game and the positive things that happened from that game. We certainty learned a lot about ourselves this weekend and now it's up to us and take what we learned and improve on it. I know we can, it's in all of you! How hard are you willing to work?

It wasn't the prettiest thing I've ever seen but I will take it! I'm proud of how we fought our way back when we were down. That's a great trait to have has a team...Remember how we did it. Now that the first game is out of the way we need to get focused and ready for Saturday. Don't settle for where you/we are at! How can you improve to make yourself/team better than yesterday? Don't look back at the end of the season and wish you could have done things a different or better way. Now is the time...Don't have those regrets at the end of the season. Keep working hard!! I can't wait to get out there and do it again. Remember each one of you are a very important part of our building. Carry the Nail.

Practice, Practice, Practice

It's been two weeks of practice but it feels like two days! Everyone has worked hard but there's a lot more work to be done. We have one more practice until our first game and we need to come to practice motivated and ready to work. If you focus on making yourself better than yesterday, you have achieved something. Many are doubting you and the team, it is up to us to prove everyone wrong. Either your in or your out!
